Many buyers have recently asked me about traacking and delivery. Here is a brief explanation as to why you may see an unusual-looking tracking number.
generates a unique ESUS number. This is the tracking number the buyer sees.
That ESUS number is linked to a USPS Intelligent Mail barcode (IMb). It's encoded with mail-routing information and a unique identifier.
USPS sorting machines read the IMb as the envelope passes through automated equipment. Each time the barcode is read, USPS sends scan information back through its systems.
Letter carriers usually don't scan these envelopes at delivery. The final sorting machine scans the envelope just before it goes to the carrier. That's why you sometimes see a "Delivered" status even though no one scanned it at the mailbox. The USPS does all the mail handling and delivery.
