Second printing of the British first edition of the book which made youafraid to enter the water. Because of the runaway success of the book in theStates (it was published there by Doubleday in Feb 1974), the Andre Deutschfirst edition went to reprint before it had even been published in Britain, twomonths later.
Note that some booksellers incorrectly describe this copy as the UK 1st/1st.It’s not……it is, to all intents and purposes, the UK 1st/2nd.The true UK 1st/1st does not have the line ‘Reprintedbefore publication’ on the copyright page. Also, note that both this UK 1st/2ndand the UK 1st/1st are substantially more scarce than themuch more ubiquitous Book Club editions.
In the novel Jaws, a massive great white shark begins terrorising theNew England resort town of Amity, and local police chief Martin Brody mustfight both the deadly predator and the town\'s profit-driven officials whorefuse to close the beaches. To stop the killer shark, Brody teams up with acynical marine biologist and a grizzled shark hunter for a perilous oceanshowdown that threatens all of their lives.
The film rights to the book were purchased before its publication in theStates, and Steven Spielberg was selected to direct the movie adaptation forhis third film, after Duel and The Sugarland Express, which wasreleased the following year. In doing so, he pretty much invented the idea ofthe summer blockbuster, and established the modern Hollywood business model,which pursues high box-office returns from action and adventure films withsimple high-concept premises, released during the summer in thousands ofcinemas and advertised heavily.
PeterBenchley went on to write a number of further books, several of which were alsoadapted for cinema and television, including The Deep, The Island,Beast and White Shark. Steven Spielberg…….well, he has nowdirected 37 feature films. He has received three Academy Awards, four GoldenGlobe Awards, four BAFTA Awards, twelve Emmy Awards, a Tony Award, and a GrammyAward; as well as the AFI Life Achievement Award, an honorary knighthood, theKennedy Center Honor, the Cecil B. DeMille Award, the Presidential Medal ofFreedom, and the National Medal of Arts.
