Antique Pair of Ornate Brass Two-Light Electric Wall Sconces — Circa 1900
Offered for your consideration is a beautiful matching pair of early American electric wall sconces dating approximately 1895–1910, most likely around the turn of the 20th century.
These are purpose-built electric fixtures, not former gas fixtures converted to electricity. They feature exceptionally elaborate period ornamentation, including a large circular floral backplate with a prominent central rose, radiating foliate decoration, smaller flowers and scrolling vines, surrounded by a twisted-rope border. The backplate is completed by an elaborate foliate crest and lower scrollwork.
Each fixture has two graceful, deeply curved reeded brass arms terminating in unusually decorative original metal socket cups/bobeches. The cups have deeply fluted sides and an embossed floral/rope-pattern rim. The repetition of the decorative motifs throughout the backplate and socket cups gives these sconces an especially rich and cohesive appearance.
The sconces have been completely restored. New sockets have been installed, along with new wiring and new rotary on/off switches. They have been polished and clear-coated with high-quality lacquer.The ornate metal fixture components shown—including the backplates, arms and decorative socket cups—are original period components.
