P1904 USMC Marine Corps EM Dress Visor Cap EGA Pre WWI Dated 1906 Horstmann
Scarce early U.S. Marine Corps Pattern 1904 enlisted dress visor cap, dated 1906 and manufactured by Horstmann, the prominent Philadelphia military outfitter.
Dark blue wool construction with black visor, leather sweatband, Marine Corps side buttons and Eagle, Globe & Anchor insignia.
The interior leather sweatband retains the Horstmann maker marking and 1906 date, visible in the photographs.
Dating to the early 20th century, this cap predates American involvement in World War I by approximately eleven years and represents an unusually early surviving example of U.S. Marine Corps dress headgear.
The cap remains highly displayable but shows considerable age and wear. The visor exhibits crazing, scuffing, finish loss and edge wear. The leather sweatband shows staining, discoloration and age-related wear. The dark blue wool has scattered lint, dust and general storage/use wear. I would like to point out that the crown has a little bit of an unusual shape, but when you put it on a mannequin head, it straightens it all out nicely.
There is remnants of a size tag, but I can’t make it out what it is.
