Otto Freundlich was a German painter and sculptor associated with early European abstraction. Active in Paris and Berlin during the first half of the 20th century, he was connected to avant-garde circles including Cubism and non-objective art movements. His work emphasized harmonious color relationships and geometric structure as a means of expressing universal ideals. Freundlich’s art was later classified as “degenerate” by the National Socialist regime, and many works were confiscated or destroyed.
“Komposition” (1939) consists of interlocking geometric and curvilinear forms arranged within a unified abstract field. The composition emphasizes balanced tonal transitions and spatial layering through structured planes of color. Created in the late 1930s, the work demonstrates Freundlich’s continued development of non-objective pictorial language.
