Wooden Icon of Saint Theodore the Tyro Holy Great Martyr
This Orthodox icon of Saint Theodore the Tyro (also known as Theodore Tiro, meaning “the Recruit”) honors one of the earliest and most revered warrior-martyrs of the Christian Church. Born in Euchaita (modern-day Turkey), Saint Theodore served as a young recruit in the Roman army in the city of Amasea of Pontus. Though new to military service, he proved to be a fearless soldier of Christ.
⚔️ Faith and martyrdom
During the persecutions under Emperor Galerius (305–311), Saint Theodore openly confessed his faith in Jesus Christ and refused to offer sacrifice to pagan idols. Accused of setting fire to the temple of the goddess Cybele, he was imprisoned and sentenced to death by starvation. While in prison, the Lord Jesus Christ appeared to him, strengthening and comforting him in his suffering.
After being found alive, Saint Theodore was again commanded to renounce Christ. Upon his refusal, he endured brutal tortures and was finally condemned to death by fire. With prayer and thanksgiving, Saint Theodore ascended the pyre and peacefully surrendered his soul to God around 305–306 AD.
🔥 Veneration and relics
According to sacred tradition, the martyr’s relics were not harmed by the flames. They were buried with reverence by a Christian woman named Eusebia in Euchaita and later transferred to Constantinople, where a church was dedicated in his honor. His holy head is preserved in Gaeta, Italy.
