Original charcoal drawing by Lionel Feininger For Sale

Lyonel Feininger (1871-1956) was a well listed, New York born American painter, cartoonist and photographer. He studied at the Hamburg School of Applied arts and then at the Berlin Academy and later in Paris. In 1911, he discovered cubism (see the painting for sale) which suited hi expressionist aims. In 1912, he met members of the Die Brucke expressionist group and was iinfluenced by their style. He is not strictly speaking a German Expressionist but his work (often churches and boats) is sometimes categorized as such. He served on the staff of the Bauhaus as an instructor in printmaking until 1923 and later joined the exhibition group \"the Blue Four\" which was comprised of the artists Kandinsky, Klee, Jawlensky and Feininger. He returned to the United States in 1938.
The artwork for sale is a charcoal sketch of three faces. The drawings are on an older sheet of thin tissue art paper. The faces are done in an expressionist style but the feel of the rendering is surreal. The piece measures 10\" high and 8 and 1/2\" across. There is no date on the artwork but is was probably done in the early 50\'s. The piece is signed \"Feininger\" in graphite at the lower right (photo 7). There is no paper trail to help with the determining of the authenticity of this little gem so it is being attributed to the artist Lyonel Feininger on the basis of signature, style, and age.
