This finely executed original oil painting is by well-known, listed artist Robert Yellowhair (1937-2016), a full-blooded Diné (Navajo) born in Na-Ah-Tee Canyon, Arizona. As a teenager, Yellowhair became immersed in art and sold his first painting for 50 cents. He became known for his realistic Southwestern scenes and is considered one of the Navajo Nation\'s finest painters. One of his award-winning works hangs in the White House.
Painted on stretchered canvas, this Southwestern still life done in realistic impressionism features a hand-painted Hopi pottery bowl and a woven Native basket against a sandy landscape with clumps of desert bunch grass. The basket is particularly well done, and the pottery designs are carefully painted. It\'s signed and dated \"R. Yellowhair 90\" lower right, with a small Native American-style symbol below. Robert Yellowhair produced some of his finest still life paintings during the 1990\'s and this is among them.
The painting is in its original rounded oak frame, measuring 15.5 inches high and 19.5 inches wide and weighing2.25 pounds. There is a sawtooth hanger on the back. In excellent condition, it\'s a handsome artwork with the intricate detail that gives it a three-dimensional quality.
This is one of the nicer Robert Yellowhair paintings we\'ve seen. Its warm earthy colors and display-friendly size make it at home in many settings.
