Original Japanese color woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada III (1848–1920), also known as Baidō Hōsai and Kunimasa IV.
The print depicts the celebrated kabuki actor Nakamura Shikan V in the female role of Shinanoya Ohan from the play “Katsuragawa Renri no Shigarami.” The production was performed at the Kabuki-za in Tokyo on March 27, 1902.

Nakamura Shikan was a prestigious hereditary kabuki stage name. The actor depicted here was Nakamura Shikan V, who held the name from 1901 until 1911 and later became Nakamura Utaemon V.
