Beautifully framed antique copperplate engraving by the Dutch botanist and artist Abraham Munting (1626–1683). This is from his posthumously published work “Phytographia Curiosa”, published in 1702.
Purchased for $797 at the Kellogg Collection in Washington DC.
The specific plant depicted is identified by the Latin inscription at the bottom as Menthastrum Virginianum Origanites Fistulosum, commonly known today as Wild Bergamot or Bee Balm (Monarda fistulosa).
Frame is expensive and very attractive. Also interior thin wood gold framing on inside of matt. (see photos)
