An attractive copy of a scarce business management volume from 1948, in its original dust jacket: Organization and Management: Selected Papers by Chester I. Barnard. The book is in Very Good condition and the blue cloth boards show just minor shelf wear. The pages are slightly age-toned; a couple of pages have unobtrusive margin markings. The scarce original, unclipped dust jacket is in About Very Good condition with minor edge chips, light soiling and a toned spine. There are some ink markings to the top of the front flap.
Barnard published this volume while he was president of New Jersey Bell Telephone Company, but he held leadership positions with many prominent organizations throughout his career, including the Rockefeller Foundation, the National Bureau of Economic Research, the Prudential Insurance Company, the USO, among many others. He held honorary degrees in law from Brown and Princeton Universities. He is most famous for his 1937 volume, The Functions of the Executive. This volume forms a valuable sequel to that work and publishes material that was not widely distributed previously. In these papers Barnard explores a range of management topics such as The Nature of Leadership, Status Systems in Formal Organizations, Dilemmas of Leadership in the Democratic Process, and even New Jersey Unemployment Riots and Planning for World Government.
