ORIGINAL BOUND VOLUME OF 1862 HARPERS WEEKLY NEWSPAPER WITH A SHARP SHOOTER ++ For Sale

This rare volume of perhaps the most important 19th century illustrated magazine published in the United States includes some of the most highly sought after images produced during the Civil War including a number of important full page plates by Winslow Homer and other famous American Artists.

During 1862 Harper's Weekly was almost entirely dedicated to coverage of the Civil War - its Battles, its Heroes, Its Villains, its Political Ramifications and the Human side of this horrific American Conflict. Included in this volume are two of the most highly sought after Winslow Homer images “The Sharpshooter” and “Thanksgiving in Camp” along with approx a dozen other works by Homer.

This important, bound volume measures approx. 11 1/2” x 16” and 1 7/8” thick and weighs close to 10 pounds. This is Volume No. VI and contains all 52 issues for the year 1862 - each issue is complete with no pages missing or articles clipped.

This fantastic, Civil War year of Harper’s Weekly contains page after page and illustration after illustration of Battles, Generals, Southern Cities, Military Camps, Black Americana plates, Confederate Army illustrations and everything one would expect from a “News” magazine during an all encompassing conflict such as the American Civil War. There is very little room in these issues for other American or Foreign news and events but the death of Martin Van Buren is covered in one of the issues. Everything imaginable related to the War can be found in these pages including much on the Navies of the Union and Confederate States, the Battles of the War, Maps and descriptions of many of the important Southern Cities, Troop Movements, Political Cartoons, Commentary, etc., etc., etc.

This rare and fascinating, 1862 Volume is bound in the original, publishers blind stamped cloth covers which are intact and sound. The spine of the Volume has been professionally restored / repaired as can be seen in the scans below. The 52 Issues are all complete and intact and although there is only very minor, physical damage (no major tears, no clipped pages and no paper loss but a small number of pages with short edge tears) the leaves do exhibit some age toning and varying degrees of foxing throughout. The Winslow Homer plates are all in very good condition with no significant physical damage of any kind. The issues are all complete and tight - there are no loose or miss folded pages. There are some short edge tears, and some small areas of edge chipping as is often seen with volumes of Harpers Weekly and is caused by years of thumbing. There are no larger tears and no losses to any of the pages. Unfortunately, the central, double page illustrations are sewn at the center and not bound on a stub. Scattered throughout the volume are some pages with small spots of staining and more extensive foxing. Overall, this volume is well preserved and a fantastic collection of Civil War Period wood engravings including a dozen or more by Winslow Homer.

Harper’s Weekly is one of the most important, original sources of historical information and cultural insights into life in 19th century America that can be found and its treatment of the Civil War is considered by many to be the most complete, contemporary record of events and policies published in the United States. We have seen the October 4, 1862 issue alone, with its printing of the Emancipation Proclamation and its report of the abolition of slavery by Abraham Lincoln, offered for sale at over $500 and the Winslow Homer illustration "The Sharpshooter" sells in the $700-$900 range when found.
