The Korean War period through the late 1950s saw production of .45 ACP M1911 ball cartridges shift from government arsenals to the commercial manufacturers. By the time of the Vietnam War period, Olin Mathieson Chemical Corp. was mass producing the M1911 ball cartridges under the Western Cartridge Co. label. Production of the M1911 ball cartridge continued into the 1980s under the Olin Corporation label. With the phase-out and gradual replacement of the M1911A1 pistol by the M9 Beretta in 1985, mass production also wound down for the M1911 ball cartridge, although limited quantities continued to be produced well in the late 1990s for specialized use.
