NKWALA by EDITH LAMBERT SHARP, WILLIAM WINTER ILLUSTRATIONS 1958 YOUNG PEOPLE
This is a former library book in acceptable condition, with its main wear being from reading and age. Strong spine. Pages are intact, no notes or highlighting. Children’s finger smudges, tanning and foxing and small tears. See photos. Publisher: Little Brown & Co; 2nd Ed., English.
A forgotten jewel of a book for children, Nkwala is about a child growing up in a Native American tribe in western Canada. When he comes of age, he has to go out into the wilderness by himself, and survive, and not return until he has found his name. He has to make a fire and shelter for himself, and find food. His big fear is that he will not find his name soon enough, and will have to stay away for a long time and become a shaman, a healer and wise person to his tribe, but also someone alone, different... This is a deceptively simple children's story, beautifully told, and looking at life in a very simple but profound way.
