About the Work - Origins: Written in 1892 when Rachmaninoff was only 19 years old as a graduation exercise for the Moscow Conservatory, where it earned him the highest grade and a Great Gold Medal.
- Plot: Based on Alexander Pushkin’s narrative poem The Gypsies with a libretto by Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko, it tells the tragic story of Aleko, a disillusioned man living among a nomadic gypsy band, who becomes consumed by jealousy and commits murder after his young wife Zemfira leaves him for another man.
