About This Painting:
Hand-painted oil on canvas copy of the Mona Lisa (La Gioconda) after Leonardo da Vinci. Signed on the back by Henri Pelletier, dated 1940. The painting measures 27 x 20 inches (69 x 51 cm), close to the dimensions of the original in the Louvre (30 x 21 inches). This is a painted copy, not a print or mechanical reproduction. Pelletier painted this copy in 1940, at a time when the original Mona Lisa had been removed from the Louvre and hidden in the French countryside to protect it from the German occupation. 
The painting was evacuated to the Chateau de Chambord in September 1939 and spent the war years in several locations across unoccupied France. Painted copies of the Mona Lisa have a long tradition going back to Leonardo\'s own workshop, where students produced versions during his lifetime.
