Jose Maria Morelos was a Mexican Catholic priest who led the War for Independence after its first leader, Miguel Hidalgo, was executed by Spain in 1811. Morelos turned out to be a far better military leader than Hidalgo, employing guerrilla warfare, rather than the earlier mass attacks in which thousands of Indian fighters had been killed. After weakening the royalist forces, Morelos\' armies were able to occupy large areas. But he was captured in 1815, tried as a heretic before the Inquisition, and executed. The state of Morelos is named for him, and he is highly esteemed as a national hero.
