Profusely illustrated with vignettes, woodcut, lithographs, each volume of the first series with a hand colored frontispiece, numerous foldouts. Condition: VG. Rubbing to edges at varying degrees. John Gardner Wilkinson was a 19th century writer and Egyptologist, often referred to as the Father of English Egyptology. Wilkinson landed in Egypt in 1821 then just 24. He would spend the next 12 years Sojourning the country, visiting nearly all known ancient Egyptian sites and all the while recording and copying inscriptions and paintings. He would return home in 1833 and publish Manners and Customs of Ancient Egypt just 4 years later. 4 years thereafter he would release the second series, containing ommited material from the first. The 6 volumes would serve as the best general title on Egyptian daily life, religion, art, culture and history for over a half century.
