SIGNATURE
The reverse of the work bears a pencil inscription reading “Man Ray.”
The signature has not been independently authenticated, and no certificate of authenticity or documented signature provenance is included.

The buyer should make an independent assessment based on the detailed photographs.

CONDITION
The poster is in generally good condition for its age.
There are a few minor spots, light marks and areas of surface dirt.
The work has been stored for an extended period but shows relatively little visible fading or overall discoloration.
The wooden frame has minor rubbing, marks, small areas of paint loss and other age-related wear.
The acrylic glazing appears serviceable.
The original paper storage box has wear, staining, tape repairs and other damage from age and storage.
Please carefully examine all photographs, particularly the close-up images of the minor stains and the pencil signature on the reverse.
This is a pre-owned vintage item and is not in new condition. All photographs form an important part of the condition description.
COMMENT
The original image was created by Man Ray in 1931 and depicts a woman’s hand dramatically covering her mouth.
By cropping the face and enlarging the lips, fingers and fingernails, Man Ray transforms a conventional portrait into a mysterious Surrealist study of the fragmented body.
The hand simultaneously suggests touch, concealment and silence. Its position over the mouth prevents the viewer from reading the woman’s expression or hearing her imagined voice, while the visible lips introduce an element of intimacy and sensuality.
The strong black-and-white contrast and close photographic framing remove the figure from any ordinary setting. The woman becomes an arrangement of skin, shadow, fingers and lips rather than a conventional portrait.
The image demonstrates Man Ray’s ability to bring together avant-garde photography, fashion imagery, psychological ambiguity and Surrealist ideas about desire and the unconscious.
