Two volumes. Octavo. Original publisher’s blue blind-stamped cloth, gilt lettering to spines; plain endpapers. Engraved portrait frontispieces and additional engraved plates (as issued).
First edition. A contemporary biography of Admiral Sir Sidney Smith (1764–1840), one of the more colorful British naval officers of the Napoleonic period, noted for his role in the defense of Acre and diplomatic and naval service in the Mediterranean and Near East.
Condition:
Bindings worn and rubbed, with fading to cloth and fraying at spine ends; corners bumped. Joints sound. Internally generally clean but with moderate foxing, heavier to plates as usual. A few scattered marginal annotations in ink. Inner hinges show some staining and wear but remain intact. A good, complete set in original cloth.
Notes:
Original cloth bindings from this period are less commonly encountered than later rebinding, making surviving examples such as this desirable to collectors of Napoleonic and naval history despite honest wear.
