She is shown in an elegant lace off-the-shoulder gown, smiling and looking upward in a classic studio pose. This is an original period studio portrait dating to approximately 1948–1952 (late 1940s to early 1950s), based on her hairstyle, makeup, lighting, and the style of similar contemporaneous publicity photographs. The reverse retains the original LENA HORNE name stamp.
Lena Horne (1917–2010) was one of the most celebrated entertainers of the 20th century. She rose to fame in the 1940s as a glamorous MGM contract player and nightclub star, breaking barriers as one of the first major Black performers in Hollywood. Known for her sophisticated style and powerful voice, she starred in films such as Stormy Weather and Cabin in the Sky, and later achieved Broadway triumph with her Tony Award-winning one-woman show Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music.
