These were written in response to a competition for writers to submit a speech to be given at the reopening of Drury Lane Theatre in London. The Smith brothers wrote 12, each one a good natured parody of the styles of 12 popular, mostly current authors to be published as failed entries in the competition. It was an immediate success. Lord Byron especially appreciated the parody of his “Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage “. Other authors parodied include Wordsworth, Scott, Southey, Coleridge, Moore and, going back a ways, Shakespeare.
