Late 17th / Early 18th Century European Iron-Hilt Transitional Smallsword
Circa 1690–1730 / Original Wire Grip
Offered is an authentic early European iron-hilt sword dating to the transitional period between the late rapier and the classic 18th-century smallsword. The sword retains an elegant oval shell guard with opposing finger rings (pas d'âne), a forged iron hilt, original wire-wrapped grip, and a forged blade with narrow fuller extending along much of its length.
The construction, hand-forged blade geometry, and untouched surfaces are consistent with surviving European examples from the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Comparable period swords feature similar double-shell guards, globular pommels, and wire-bound grips.
