VERY RARE LARGE An impressive and highly decorative antique French gilt bronze cartel wall clock, fitted with a French mechanical movement bearing the maker’s stamp “S. Marti” and “MÉDAILLE D’OR 1900.”

The movement is associated with Samuel Marti, one of the well-known French clock movement manufacturers of the late 19th and early 20th century.

This is a large, heavy and substantial clock, featuring an elaborate gilt bronze case mounted on a shaped black wooden backboard.

The richly decorated case includes classical French ornamentation throughout, including an impressive upper urn, flowing garlands, architectural details, decorative finials, and distinctive ram/goat head ornaments on either side of the upper section. The bronze casting is detailed and gives the clock a very grand and unusual appearance.

The clock has a large white porcelain/enamel dial with elegant black Arabic numerals, delicate hand-painted floral decoration, and ornate gilt hands.

The French mechanical movement is stamped:

S. Marti

MÉDAILLE D’OR 1900

The clock has been tested and is running. The striking mechanism is also working. It strikes once on the bell at the half hour and strikes the corresponding number of times on the hour.

We tested the clock for running and striking only. Accuracy and long-term timekeeping have not been tested. As with most antique mechanical clocks, adjustment may be required after shipping or installation.

Condition

Overall, the clock is in very good antique condition.

The gilt bronze case is in very attractive condition with beautiful age-related patina and surface wear. We do not see any major breaks or repairs to the bronze case or the wooden backboard.

The large porcelain dial is also in very good condition. There is only a very small chip around the right-side winding hole, as shown in the photographs.

There are normal signs of age, including minor surface wear, patina, oxidation and finish variation consistent with an antique clock.

This is a large, heavy, unusual and highly decorative French wall clock with an impressive architectural presence. The combination of the substantial gilt bronze case, porcelain dial, bell-striking S. Marti movement, ram-head decorations and black wooden backboard makes it a particularly attractive example for a serious antique clock collection or French-style interior.
