This is the original 1998 pressing of Discouraged Ones, the third full-length album by Katatonia, a Swedish band formed in Stockholm in 1991. Widely regarded as a pivotal release in the band’s career, this album marked a major stylistic shift away from death/doom roots toward a darker, stripped-down gothic metal and melancholic rock sound.

The lineup on this release features:

• Jonas Renkse – vocals, drums

• Anders Nyström – guitars, keyboards

• Fredrik Norrman – guitars

• Micke Oretoft – bass

Discouraged Ones is notable as the last Katatonia album with Jonas Renkse on drums and the first to fully abandon growled vocals in favor of clean, emotionally restrained singing. Recorded at Sunlight Studios in Sweden, the album is often cited as a breakthrough release that laid the foundation for Katatonia’s later sound and broader recognition.

The CD was released by Avantgarde Music, an influential European independent label known throughout the 1990s for issuing landmark underground metal releases. Original Avantgarde CD pressings from this era are increasingly difficult to find, especially in sealed condition.
