Japanese Gold Maki-e Lacquer Tray – Hyotan Gourd & Vine Design
Finely decorated Japanese lacquer tray featuring an elaborate hyotan (gourd) and trailing vine design executed in gold maki-e against a richly speckled nashiji-style lacquer ground.
The composition incorporates solid gold-toned leaves, finely outlined foliage, gourds and delicate curling tendrils, creating considerable variation in texture and detail. The decoration continues around the raised interior border, with additional gold vine decoration on the reverse.
Approximately 4 3/4\" inches in diameter.
The piece is unsigned. Based on its materials, construction and decorative style, it appears consistent with early 20th-century Japanese lacquerware; however, no specific Meiji, Taisho or Showa attribution is being made.
