Japanese Antique Kyo Satsuma [SIGNED] Matsumoto Hozan Plate 19cm Meiji Japan For Sale

Antique Japanese Kyo-Satsuma plate by Matsumoto Hozan (松本寶山), Meiji period, circa 1880s–1890s.
ABOUT:This 19 cm (7.5 in) plate is decorated with a scene from Act 6 of the famous Kabuki and Bunraku play "Kanadehon Chushingura" (The Treasury of Loyal Retainers). In this scene, Okaru agrees to sell herself to a brothel in Gion so that her husband Kanpei can contribute funds to the plot to avenge his lord. The picture shows the moment of farewell: the broker Genroku (rolling up his sleeve at right) is about to put Okaru into the waiting palanquin, while Kanpei kneels at the lower left.
ARTIST:Matsumoto Hozan (real name Matsumoto Chubei) was a potter and decorator working in Kyoto, in the Meiji era. His workshop is listed as a pottery manufacturer in the 1883 Kyoto business directory "Miyako no Sakigake." He is also said to have been involved in painting Kyo-Satsuma for the Yasuda company, and pieces bearing both the "Yasuda" mark and the "Matsumoto Hozan" signature are known.
