ISLAMIC DYNASTIES, Great Mongols, Möngke Khan, AH 649-657/ AD 1251-1259, broad AE dirham (42mm, 6.17gm), also citing the \'Abbasid caliph al-Nasir, Baldat Otrar mint, dated “58” (AH 658). Album 3772 (1978C.1, RR). The mint and date formula is repeated in both margins. On this specimen, we find a bold mint name on one side and a bold date on the other, exceptional thus. Nice Very Fine for type with coppery light brown surfaces.

Möngke Khan was the fourth Great Khan of the Mongol Empire, grandson of Genghis Khan and brother of Kublai, ruling from 1 July 1251 to 11 August 1259. Under Möngke, the Mongols expanded into the Levant and in East Asia, conquered the Kingdom of Dali (modern Yunnan). In 1253, Möngke established a department of monetary affairs to reign in the over-issuance of paper money. Vassal states were allowed to continue to mint coins in the denomination and weight to which they were accustomed. Möngke is believed to have died in Sichuan, during the Siege of Diaoyucheng near modern-day Chongqing. He was reportedly laid to rest in Mongolia, near the tombs of Genghis and his father Tolui.
