Holy Bible - American Bicentennial Edition, 1776-1976 (Thomas Nelson, 1975) - King James Version, Red Letter Reference Dated July 4th, 1975 on its title page and built for the two hundredth birthday of the United States, this is one of the great American commemorative Bibles - and it arrives in the year the country turns two hundred and fifty. Thomas Nelson produced it for Jerry Falwell's Ministries Aflame of Lynchburg, Virginia, and they did not do it by halves. The King James text is set as a Red Letter Reference edition with colour plates of classical paintings of biblical scenes and a Harmony of the Gospels. Bound in around it is a whole second book about America: A Diary of America, a narrative history with portraits, plus a section reproducing the significant documents of the republic, and a Historic Christian Symbols chart. The cover is padded white leatherette with gilt lettering and the Liberty Bell struck in copper foil. It is a family Bible in the full sense - and the best thing about this particular copy is what is not in it: the presentation page is blank and the entire family register, marriage certificate and children's records alike, was never filled in.
