Heritage Press Classics Lot of 3: Sister Carrie, Poems of Shakespeare & South Wind

Theodore Dreiser; William Shakespeare; Norman Douglas

The Heritage Press, New York

Various dates

Heritage Press editions

Illustrated editions

All three volumes are in Fine condition overall, clean, sound and unmarked except for a blind-stamped set of initials (“EBC”) to the verso of the front free endpaper of Sister Carrie. South Wind shows light sun bleaching to the spine but is otherwise Fine. Sister Carrie and The Poems of Shakespeare both include their original Heritage Club Sandglass inserts. All three original slipcases are present and structurally sound, grading approximately Good overall, with varying cosmetic wear including rubbing, scuffing, edge and corner wear and other minor signs of age and storage. Please see photos for the individual condition of each book and case.

A handsome group of three illustrated Heritage Press classics: Theodore Dreiser’s Sister Carrie, William Shakespeare’s The Poems of Shakespeare, and Norman Douglas’s South Wind. Each is presented in the distinctive decorative binding characteristic of George Macy’s Heritage Press productions and retains its original slipcase. Sister Carrie features illustrations by Reginald Marsh and an illustrated pink cloth binding; The Poems of Shakespeare is attractively bound with a gilt-decorated red cloth spine and patterned boards; and South Wind features a blue cloth binding with contrasting spine and orange lettering. The books include illustrated interiors, quality typography and the carefully considered book design for which Heritage Press editions are known.

The Heritage Press was established by George Macy as a companion to his Limited Editions Club, bringing many of the same thoughtfully designed and illustrated classics to a wider readership. These three volumes make a particularly varied sampling of its output, ranging from Dreiser’s landmark American realism and Shakespeare’s poetry to Douglas’s celebrated Mediterranean novel. The survival of the original slipcases—and particularly the Sandglass inserts accompanying Sister Carrie and Shakespeare—adds considerably to the completeness and character of the group.
