I\'m pleased to offer this specimen of Allanite-(Ce) with ??? from the Kingman Feldspar quarry, Kingman, Mohave County, Arizona. The specimen measures 3.29 x 2.54 x 2.25 inches or 8.36 x 6.45 x 5.72cm and weighs 1 lb 1.6 ounces or 501 grams.
This is from the John Weber (1926-2015) collection of Phoenix, Arizona and was donated to the Pinal Geology and Mineral Museum in Coolidge, Arizona by his family. John was friends with our museum founder, Dr. Raymond Grant (raygrantite) and we were stunned to arrive at John\'s home in central Phoenix to find that he had a special building erected on his beautiful property to house his geological collections and associated books! I\'m the volunteer curator at the PGMM and have long been using excess specimens and books, etc. to raise funds for the museum. To this end, all proceeds from the sale of PGMM items go directly to the museum! Thank you for your support.
This specimen was collected by our founder, Ray, in January 1993 and comes with a label from retired dealer David Shannon Minerals of Mesa, Arizona. It is also accompanied by John\'s original catalog card. David was John\'s favorite source for specimens. Ray and I have talked at length about the Kingman Feldspar quarry owing to my interest in radio&ctiv* minerals. I would love to collect here someday!!
There is almost certainly other minerals present on this piece. The brownish rind may contain other minerals--at the very least it likely hosts iron oxide mineralization. Many of these, when analyzed, show allanite-(Nd) and inclusions of thorite (var. thorogummite).
The locality was formerly worked for feldspar and produced more than 100,000 pounds (mindat.org). The pegmatites here are quite large and Ray mentioned that one could pick up these allanite-(Ce) masses with crude crystal faces weighing up to many pounds in weight. Ray had one mass of crude crystals weighing about 30 pounds as a yard rock!
I placed this specimen on my Ludlum Model 3 Survey Meter with the specimen placed on the probe for one minute and achieved a maximum reading of 150Kcpm. As this is r*dio@ctiv$, there is no international shipping available. Other faces showed much less and the two highest readings were 120K and 150Kcpm.
