Long before the sails of foreign ships appeared on the horizon, Hawaiians gathered Ti plants—lāʻī—not just for lei and hula but for their roots, rich with mana. From these roots came a fermented brew, sacred and strong, used in ceremony and celebration.When the haole arrived, bringing iron stills and knowledge of distillation, the humble brew was transformed into okolehao, the \"Iron Bottom\" —named for the peculiar shape of the still. It was said that even Kāne, the God of Creation, might sip it if he wandered among mortals.
But with the missionaries came new rules and foreign ideas of piety. Okolehao, once cherished and tied to the ʻāina, was branded a sin, its making and drinking forofferden by law. The kanaka whispered tales of rebellion with secret sips of Oke beneath the moonlight, when the winds carried songs of the Ancestors. Okolehao became a bridge between the old and the new, a spirit that held the heart of Hawaiʻi in its essence. Even in its exile, it spoke of resilience, of ʻāina, and the enduring strength of Hawaiian traditions; Okole Maluna!
