ABOUT THE ARTIST: Alexandre Gregoire was born in Jacmel, in the south of Haiti onAugust 29, 1922. As a youth he played the saxophone in the Haitian Army Band,and on the day of his release from the army, he joined the band at the NationalPalace. He held this position until 1968 when he turned to painting at theurging of his friends Prefete Duffaut and Pierre-Joseph Valcin.
His oil oncanvas paintings featured humorous and playful representations of bothhistorical scenes and everyday life. His work is included in the permanentcollections of the Musée d’Art Haitien in Port-au-Prince, the Waterloo Museumof Art in Iowa, and the Milwaukee Art Center. In 1997, his paintings featuredin Island on Fire, an exhibition ofHaitian art collection of Hollywood film producer, Jonathan Demme, at theEquitable Gallery, New York. He is considered one of the best of Haiti'sfirst generation of so-called 'naive' artists,
Gregoire passedaway at home in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on 7.28.2001, he was 79.
