Fine. The book is clean and sound, with only a few faint handling marks visible on the covers. The red quarter-leather binding and gilt decoration display beautifully.
Red leather covers the spine and part of the boards, with decorated red cloth over the remainder. The binding features raised spine bands, gilt lettering and ornament, and richly marbled endpapers. Its illustrations reproduce work by F. W. Pailthorpe from an 1885 portfolio of etchings.
First published in 1860–61, Great Expectations follows Pip from his childhood encounter with an escaped convict through an inheritance that transforms his prospects. This Franklin Library edition gives Dickens’s novel a particularly handsome presentation while retaining Pailthorpe’s nineteenth-century vision of its characters and scenes.
