What You Get ► Two Blue Note albums from Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, sold together: Paseo with his New Cuban Quartet and Avatar with a young New York quintet. ► Paseo is the Afro-Cuban record — Ignacio Berroa on drums, Armando Gola on electric bass, Luis Felipe Lamoglia on saxophone — five long, rhythmically dense pieces cut at the Hit Factory and Criteria. ► Avatar turns toward post-bop with Michael Rodriguez, Yosvany Terry, Matt Brewer and Marcus Gilmore; the McLaughlin dedication “Infantil” gives away the fusion streak under all that technique. ► Rubalcaba is one of the great modern jazz pianists, and neither of these turns up much anymore. Two Blue Notes, one shipment.
