German occupation of Poland 1 Złoty on 55+15 Groschen stamp issued for the Generalgouvernement on 8 March 1940.
The issue was created by applying a bold black occupation overprint to a Polish Winter Relief – Pomoc Zimowa semi-postal stamp. The overprint adds the new 1 Złoty denomination, the inscription “General-Gouvernement” and the German occupation emblem.
The underlying Polish stamp was originally issued in 1938 to raise funds for winter relief. Designed by Wacław Boratyński, its evocative design depicts hands warming themselves over a fire, directly reflecting the charitable purpose of the original issue.
Only approximately 56,000 examples of this 1 Złoty overprint were produced, making it one of the less common values of the 1940 provisional overprint series.
Mint hinged condition with strong ultramarine color, bold black overprint, good overall centering and generally attractive perforations. A large old hinge/paper remnant remains attached to the reverse, with substantial gum disturbance and age toning. Some age discoloration is also present toward the upper portion.
