Letters of Fyodor Michailovitch Dostoyevsky to His Family and Friends

Fyodor Dostoevsky(1821–1881) was a Russian novelist, philosopher, and journalist, widely regarded as one of the greatest writers in world literature. His works explore deep psychological, moral, and spiritual questions, often focusing on human suffering, free will, guilt, faith, and redemption. Quarter bindingis a bookbinding style whereonly the spine and a small portion of the front and back covers (about one-quarter of their width)are covered in a different, usually stronger material—traditionallyleather—while the remaining cover area is covered incloth or paper.

The text blocks of these deluxe elite editions are composed of single, loose, acid-freeivorysheets (70 gsm), bound using a reinforced lumbeck binding method. This traditional structure yields a spine of exceptional durability and suppleness, allowing the volume to open fully (lay-flat) and rest naturally in the hand. When executed with proper craftsmanship and archival materials, books bound in this manner possess an expected lifespan of 80–100 years under regular use and retain the important advantage of straightforward repairability.

The binding is carried out using a specialized E5 acid-free adhesive, formulated exclusively for spine application and offering greater flexibility than even the finest conventional bookbinder’s glues. The spine is subsequently reinforced with carefully chosen mull and kraft paper of appropriate weight, ensuring a secure and lasting union between the text block and the endpapers. In keeping with traditional practice, each volume is completed with restrained headbands and double satin ribbon markers.
Custom refinements are available upon request. Alternative paper stocks—such aschamoisin place of ivory—or additional ribbon markers in distinct colors may be specified in advance.

The case itself is constructed entirely from acid-free materials, each selected by Collectible Library bookbinders to convey permanence, balance, and quiet luxury. These include 3 mm archival bookboards, ultra-durable faux leather, fine buckram book cloth, and 50-micron slim heat-transfer foil applied with precision. Standard deluxe elite editions are supplied with matte 170 gsm C2S endpapers; however, bespoke options—such as marbled papers or alternative foil and cloth color combinations—may be commissioned, whether silver in place of gold or grey buckram in lieu of green, or gold edges?
