Frances Benjamin Johnston (1864-1952) was an independent, strong willed woman who was given her first camera by family friend George Eastman, the inventor of the new lighter Eastman Kodak cameras. Her photographs captured the American scene and because of her family connections and her comfort in the Washington scene, she became the official White House photographer for the Harrison, Cleveland, McKinley, Teddy Roosevelt and Taft Administrations. She was a constant advocate of the role of women in photography.
