Antique Japanese Satsuma Vase – Meiji Period
A finely decoratedJapanese Satsuma pottery vase, dating to theMeiji period (1868–1912). The vase has an elegant elongated baluster form with a warm ivory/cream ground, finely crazed glaze, and hand-painted decoration accented with gilt details.
Decoration:The principal scene features cascadingpurple wisteria blossoms and leafy vinesdescending gracefully from above. Below is a tranquil Japanese landscape withdistant blue-green mountains, traditional buildings with golden-yellow roofs, trees, and flowering vegetation. Pink and red chrysanthemums and other blossoms decorate the lower portion, creating a colorful contrast against the restrained ivory ground. The reverse is comparatively undecorated, emphasizing the main pictorial panel.
The neck and foot are finished withgilt and patterned borders, giving the piece an attractive formal presentation typical of decorative Japanese wares produced during the Meiji era.
Measurements: 7 1/2 inches x 3 inches wide
Mark:The underside bears a rectangular Japanese maker/decorator's mark, as photographed. The exact workshop or artist attribution has not been confirmed.
Condition:Presents well overall withfine glaze crazing throughout, consistent with the age and nature of Satsuma-type pottery. There is expected age-related wear, including some rubbing/loss to the gilding and decoration and minor surface wear. The foot shows normal discoloration and wear from age and use.
