Historic Masters was a historical reissue record label dedicatedto making available quality

pressings on vinyl of rare 78 rpm recordings ofopera singers. Historic Masters claimed to be

\"the only company in theworld issuing 78 rpm discs of historic vocal and operatic material on

a regularbasis\".

Originally an offshoot of the British Institute of RecordedSound, Historic Masters was the

brainchildof the actor, record collector andconnoisseur of singers, Richard Bebb. The initial

HistoricMasters release wasplanned as a subscriber-only series of twenty reissues, pressed

on highqualityvinyl using original metal parts from the EMI archive.

The first release was despatched to subscribers in 1973.Despite making a profit, theBritish

Institute of Recorded Sound lost interestin the project. To fill the gap, Historic Masters Ltd,

was set up as anindependent company. It was able to release its first reissue in 1983: a setof

fiverecords produced in a similar manner as before and again distributed on asubscriber-only

basis.

Many more releases followed along similar lines, includingsome records which had never

previously been released in any format. As of2011, when Historic Masters ceased operation,

theyhad released over two hundred discs byhistoric singers, including larger collections of

recordingsby Fernando DeLucia, Nellie Melba, Adelina Patti and Francesco Tamagno.
