March 22, 1975: It was the week before Easter, the evening of the nationwide "Easter Seals Telethon" television broadcast, airing from coast to coast across America.While most of the country was glued to their TVs,Ewas on stage at the Las Vegas Hilton. That same evening, he quietly donated $5,000 to the telethon's cause, which benefited children with disabilities.
His backup singers, The Sweet Inspirations, had just performed live on the show.During the broadcast,Ejoked about the telethon, the other charity, March of Dimes, and even the long-awaited tax refund checks everyone was expecting that week."I'm still waiting for my refund," he laughed. "I didn't get mine and had to pay for my breakfast."
But the millionaire who claimed to be getting nothing gave something instead, turning humor into generosity and a Las Vegas night into a moment of Easter grace.
