The Country Living “Country Stencils” kit, still in its original publisher shrink wrap — ten durable pre-cut plastic stencils plus a full step-by-step instruction book in one folder.

The back cover lists the motifs: pineapple, star, heart, pinwheel and buttercup border, plus seven more traditional country designs. The book covers combining two or more stencils into your own designs, cutting new ones, and working on walls, floors and floorcloths, with full-colour photographs of finished rooms and a trade-tips section on paints, brushes and supplies.

Unopened. The shrink wrap is intact right around the folder, so the stencils have never been separated, taped down or painted through.

Size: the folder is about 12 x 9 in and around 1/2 in thick.

Being sealed, the stencils inside are as the publisher packed them. I have not cut the wrap to count them — the cover states ten, and that is what I am repeating.

The flaws, all of them:

• The shrink wrap is wrinkled and has clear tape at two corners, applied over the wrap rather than under it.
• Shelf wear and light scuffing to the card folder beneath the wrap, with a small mark on the front panel.
• Light edge and corner bumping, as you would expect from a book-format kit that has been stored upright.

• Reusable plastic, not paper — wipe them down and the same ten stencils do a whole house, then the next one.
• Sealed means complete. The usual problem with second-hand stencil kits is a missing sheet; that cannot have happened here.
• Classic American country motifs that have come back round: pineapple, heart, star and pinwheel are exactly the vocabulary of current farmhouse and primitive decor.
• The instruction book is the real value — technique, paint choice and how to combine motifs, with photographed rooms to copy.
• Works on more than walls: floors, floorcloths, furniture, fabric and paper all take these.
