John Singleton Copley (1738-1815) stands as the finest artist of colonial America. Born in Boston, Copley mastered portraiture under his stepfather Peter Pelham, achieving distinction before age twenty through works like "Paul Revere" and "A Boy With A Flying Squirrel," which earned praise from Joshua Reynolds and Benjamin West when exhibited in London in 1766. Known for his distinctive Rococo style that incorporated subjects' personal objects to create dynamic compositions, Copley elevated American portraiture with powerful realism and directness. Political turmoil prompted his 1776 relocation to England, where he pursued historical painting with increasing academic sophistication. His masterwork "Watson and the Shark" (1778) and "The Death of Major Peirson" (1783) established him as a leading artist of the era. Elected to the Royal Academy in 1779, Copley's legacy encompasses both colonial portraiture and ambitious historical compositions that bridged American and European artistic traditions.
