Austria 1867 – 10 Kreuzer Blue – Emperor Franz Joseph I
Classic Austrian Empire definitive depicting Emperor Franz Joseph I, issued following the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867.
The 1867 series was initially valid throughout both the Austrian and Hungarian halves of the new Dual Monarchy. Hungary continued using these common imperial stamps until 1871, while they remained valid in the Austrian territories considerably longer.
This 10 Kreuzer value is the blue coarse-print version, distinguished from the later fine printing by the heavier treatment of Franz Joseph\'s hair, eyebrow and beard. The early issue was printed typographically by the Austrian State Printing Office and perforated 9½. The later printing, introduced from 1874, displays noticeably finer portrait detail.
The stamp was printed on sheets carrying the large BRIEF-MARKEN sheet watermark. Because the watermark extended over an entire sheet rather than appearing separately on every stamp, many individual examples show no recognizable letter fragment.
