The elaborate arrangement features numerous flowers painstakingly fashioned from natural seashells, including finely layered pink rose blossoms, small white and pink flowers, buds and other floral elements. The flowers are arranged with fabric leaves and stems in a wonderful shell-form vessel or vase raised on individual shell feet.
The entire arrangement is protected beneath a tall hand-blown-style glass dome resting on a black wooden display base with a velvet-covered platform. The combination of delicate shell flowers, mother-of-pearl coloration and the large glass dome gives the piece a particularly striking Victorian parlor presentation.
Shellwork and shell-flower arrangements became fashionable decorative and souvenir arts during the 19th century, particularly during the Victorian period. This is a substantial and unusually elaborate example with a large variety of shell blossoms.
