Beautiful and authentic late 19th-century Victorian portrait of a young child, dating approximately 1880–1900. This striking piece is an excellent example of the period technique commonly known as a crayon enlargement or hand-worked charcoal portrait.
Unlike many surviving crayon portraits created on fragile paper, this example appears to have been executed or hand-finished over a stretched canvas support, giving the artwork a substantial and impressive presentation.
The portrait depicts a young child with soft curls, hair bows, and an intricately detailed lace-trimmed collar, posed thoughtfully with their chin resting forward. The subtle modeling of the face, hair, and clothing creates the soft, almost photographic quality associated with late-Victorian enlarged portraiture.
The artwork remains behind its original protective glass, helping preserve the delicate charcoal and hand-worked details with excellent contrast.
Original Ornate Gilt Frame:
The portrait is housed in its beautiful, heavily ornamented gold-toned gilt wood and molded gesso frame. The deeply modeled decorative borders give the piece an elaborate Victorian appearance appropriate to the period.
The reverse retains historic construction details, including a wide-plank wooden backing/support and aged oxidized hanging wire, adding to the portrait\'s authentic antique character.

Condition:
Good, structurally stable antique condition considering its approximately 125+ years of age. The canvas support remains remarkably flat and tight over its wooden stretcher without noticeable sagging or warping. The portrait remains sharp with strong contrast and well-preserved detail.
The original gilt frame displays expected age-related surface wear and several small losses/chips to the molded gesso decoration. The reverse and hanging hardware also exhibit natural age and oxidation.
