Antique Victorian Coffin Thumbscrews Pair Japanned Gilt 19th Century For Sale

Pair of antique Victorian coffin thumbscrews, mid-to-late 19th century. These decorative screws were used to fasten coffin lids during the Victorian era, when funerary hardware was made to be seen and ornamented accordingly.

Each screw has an oval head with the original black japanned finish showing generous traces of the gilt decoration, a small side ball knob that served as the thumb turn (no screwdriver needed), and a coarse deep wood-screw thread. The two are a matched pair with the same head form and thread pattern.

Measurements: approximately 4.5\" long overall, head approximately 1.25 x 1\"
