DESCRIPTION
A scarce New England liquor merchant advertising jug. Cobalt label reads in full \"P. H. DONOHOE & CO. / WINES AND LIQUORS / 40 CHURCH STREET / LOWELL, - MASS.\" Two-tone Albany slip glaze. Jug is about 1/2 gallon or 3-quart size.
Peter H. Donohoe founded the company in the late 19th century as an importer and wholesale dealer of brandies, whiskies, and wines. It operated in the pre-Prohibition days up until 1922, when like many similar New England alcohol merchants and regional breweries, the company closed due the nationwide ban on alcohol that took effect in 1920.
CONDITION
Overall very good. Some small flakes around the rim and a small flake on the base. Clear and crisp cobalt lettering. No cracks or repairs evident (all visible in the images).
