Antique NOS 1940s McKee Range-Tec Milk Glass Tea Kettle Jeannette PA Art Deco For Sale

Imagine opening a kitchen cupboard in the late 1940s and finding this futuristic new creation waiting inside: a brilliantly white glass kettle that could be placed directly on the stove, measured the water through molded cup markings, and cheerfully whistled when it was ready.

This is an exceptional McKee Range-Tec whistling tea kettle, made by the McKee Glass Company of Jeannette, Pennsylvania. It survives with its wonderfully graphic original factory box and original star-shaped metal heat diffuser.

Best of all, the kettle appears to be unused new-old stock. The pristine milk-glass body, spotless interior, bright metal fittings, and beautiful translucent red handle show no apparent evidence that it ever spent time boiling water on a stove.

McKee was advertising its Range-Tec tea kettles by 1946, and Range-Tec cookware continued into the early 1950s. The typography, two-color illustrated carton, red molded handle, and McKee-era branding strongly place this example in the late 1940s, most likely around 1946–1950.

McKee was one of the great names in American cooking glass. Although the box proudly states “Established 1853,” this kettle was manufactured at the company’s glassworks in Jeannette, Pennsylvania, a city internationally known for its glass industry. The included star-shaped metal piece is the kettle’s original stove-top heat diffuser or flame guard. It was not merely an optional trivet—it was supplied to help protect the glass kettle during use.

The diffuser is placed flat and centered over the stove burner, with the kettle resting on top of it. It creates a small protective separation between the glass and the burner while distributing the kettle’s support more evenly. This helps prevent one small portion of the glass bottom from receiving dramatically more heat than the surrounding area.

Without the diffuser, concentrated burner heat can create a severe temperature difference between the hottest part of the bottom and the cooler glass surrounding it. That uneven expansion can cause thermal shock, potentially cracking or even suddenly breaking the kettle.

In other words, the diffuser is the little unsung hero of the set—the part that often became separated and lost over the following 75-plus years. Finding the kettle with its correct original diffuser and factory box makes this a notably complete example.

Although this was originally sold as functional top-of-stove cookware, it is now approximately 75–80 years old. Its unused appearance does not guarantee that the vintage glass or fittings remain safe for heat. It is offered primarily as a collectible display piece. Any attempt at actual use would be entirely at the buyer’s risk. It should never be subjected to high heat, sudden temperature changes, or use without the diffuser.

The kettle has a wonderfully sculptural ribbed beehive form rendered in glossy white heat-resistant milk glass. Molded cup graduations appear on the side, while the bright aluminum collar supports a classic whistling cap with a black knob.

The graceful translucent deep-red handle supplies the perfect splash of late-1940s color. Together with the original carton’s red-and-green graphics, the entire package embodies the optimistic postwar kitchen—when new appliances and heat-resistant glassware promised a cleaner, brighter, more convenient American home.

The box advertised the kettle as:

“Sturdy, Bright, Attractive, Sanitary”

It also promised “clean, clear water and perfect visibility at all times”—advertising language apparently created for the clear-glass version, even though this particularly striking example is fashioned in opaque white milk glass.

The scarce original illustrated carton is present but understandably shows considerable age and structural wear:

• General surface wear and discoloration from storage

The box is worn, but its survival adds tremendous character, identification and completeness to the set. Please examine all photographs carefully; the box is included as an important original component but should be handled gently.

Most surviving Range-Tec kettles have been used, stained, damaged, or separated from their accessories decades ago. This example brings together all three elements collectors want:
