Beautiful antique pair of Japanese Satsuma earthenware vases dating to the Meiji period.
Each vase measures approximately 7.25” tall x 3.5” diameter and features a baluster form with slender neck and ornate molded elephant-head handles highlighted in gilt. Finely decorated in polychrome enamels and raised gilding over a traditional cream crackle-glazed ground.
The central panels depict detailed samurai figures in traditional armor beneath flowering cherry blossoms. Elaborate geometric, floral and brocade-style decoration surrounds the neck and foot, with extensive gold detailing throughout.
Each vase bears a black square seal with gold characters on the underside.
